Sitting just south of the square, Midland Gainesville is an up and coming district that is the focal point of a massive redevelopment plan to yield new shops, restaurants, and activities for locals and visitors to enjoy. This extension of downtown provides a family friendly space for public events, leisure activities, and all around fun. Let us walk you through the area with five ideas for your next day trip to Gainesville.

The Midland Greenway

The Midland Greenway walking trail, named after the Midland Railroad, follows the rail line that was a prevalent part of Gainesville’s growth in the early 1900’s. This greenway is a part of Gainesville’s multi-use trail system that is planned to stretch 30 miles across Gainesville. While you stroll along the path in Midland, check out the beautiful murals, all painted by local artists, giving a vibrant feel to the historic area. Pass by past industrial artifacts that were kept from the early 20th century, such as the engine and caboose that were once used on the Midland Railroad.

In addition to the Greenway, Gainesville offers a trolley for anyone and everyone to have access to public transit throughout various parts of the city on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Gainesville Parks & Rec is also slated to bring a new amphitheater to the Midland Greenway come 2024.

The Inked Pig

After walking, running, biking or skating the trail, we recommend stopping for some great barbecue. Since 2018, The Inked Pig has been serving up some of the best pulled pork sandwiches and brisket that Georgia has to offer. You’ve most likely seen them smoking meats at local events around town, but the restaurant itself is where the magic happens. Located on the far end of Main Street, this BBQ spot will surely be a highlight of your day in Gainesville. They have rotating specials and fun creative dishes consistently!

Gainesville Skate Park

If you’re planning a Midland outing with friends or kids who love to skate, the Gainesville Skate Park is a perfect location to relax and let them run wild. Sitting on High Street next to the pond, this park is easily accessible and provides family fun for all ages. Just around the corner, kids will also enjoy Let There be Rock, Gainesville’s local music lesson facility and rock and roll community center. For night life events, Blackstrap hosts numerous live music events for metal, rock, and more.

Midland Dog Park

If you decide to bring your pups along, you’ll want to stop by the Midland Dog Park, only a short walk from the skate park, on the other side of the pond. This fenced-in area is perfect for dogs of all sizes, and gives them a great opportunity to socialize with with others. Don’t miss Gainesville’s Midland Dog Park kickoff event October 5th from 5:00-7:00pm. They are throwing a “Yappy Hour” to celebrate dogs and humans alike with great raffle prizes, good tunes, a pup pre-adoption event and more.
